Addison’s Game Plan to Bite Back Against Mosquitoes

Mosquito Prevention Graphic

Addison is taking a proactive approach to mosquito control, and you can help. While the Town monitors and responds to mosquito activity, residents play a vital role in keeping our community safe and comfortable during mosquito season.

What You Can Do

Mosquito control starts at home. Everyone plays a role in preventing mosquito breeding. Here’s how you can help:

Eliminate Standing Water

  • Empty, remove, cover, or turn over any container that can hold water (e.g., buckets, tires, flower pots, cans).
  • Refresh water in pet dishes, birdbaths, and wading pools several times a week.
  • Cover trash cans so they don’t collect rainwater.
  • Repair leaking plumbing, hoses, and outdoor faucets.

Maintain Screens

  • Keep doors, porches, and window screens in good condition to help keep mosquitoes outside.

Dress for Protection

  • When outdoors, wear long sleeves and pants to minimize skin exposure.

Use Mosquito Repellent

  • Products containing DEET are recommended. Always follow the label directions carefully.

To help reduce mosquito populations and protect Addison residents from bites, the Addison Environmental Health Division is offering free Mosquito Dunks at the Addison Athletic Club.

What the Town is Doing

Last month, the Town deployed four mosquito traps. These are collected weekly and sent to Dallas County Health and Human Services labs for testing. The traps are designed only to capture the types of mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus. When we get a positive test result, we will respond by spraying the entire town the following two mornings. Mosquito spraying will be almost exclusively restricted to the detection of the West Nile Virus in the Addison area.

We notify residents about spraying in several ways:

  • Alerts on the website (addisontx.gov).
  • Posts on social media, including Next Door.
  • Texts through AddisonAlert.com to those who are registered to receive mosquito spraying notices.

Together, we can reduce the mosquito population and enjoy a safer summer in Addison.
