At the May 27 City Council meeting, Addison became one of the first cities in Texas to formally designate its Public Works employees as Public Works First Responders. This action authorizes the use of the American Public Works Association’s national symbol, acknowledging the critical role these professionals play in public safety.

In a show of unity, the entire Public Works team attended the meeting wearing matching shirts and proudly carrying the Public Works First Responder flag. Often described as the “silent arm of public safety,” these professionals are among the first to arrive and the last to leave during emergencies, working to protect and restore essential services in the face of natural disasters, infrastructure failures, and other crises.

This recognition aligns with a 2003 presidential directive and longstanding national emergency management protocols that place Public Works alongside police, fire, and EMS as essential emergency responders. Addison’s action both honors this vital role and gives the team the public acknowledgment they deserve.
