Expired Violations and Other Dismissals

Expired Driver's License or Motor Vehicle Registration

You may be eligible to have a citation for these violations dismissed.

*****PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH EXPIRED REGISTRATION YOU MUST RENEW IN PERSON AT YOUR LOCAL TAX OFFICE AND PAY THE LATE REGISTRATION PENALTY.  THIS CHARGE MUST BE LISTED ON YOUR RECEIPT TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR DISMISSAL. THIS PENALTY FEE CANNOT BE PAID ON THE STATE'S WEB PORTAL FOR RENEWAL.

To have a citation for an expired driver's license or an expired registration dismissed, you must:

• Appear in court by the appearance date on your citation.
• Get the violation corrected before your first court date and provide proof to that effect to the Court.
• Obtain Motor Vehicle Registration and it must show that a penalty was paid to the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time the registration was renewed. If the penalty is not paid, the Court cannot dismiss the citation.
• Pay the dismissal fee.

To have a citation for Failure To Report Change of Address dismissed, you must:

• Appear in court by the appearance date on your citation.
• Get the violation corrected before your first court date and provide proof to that effect to the court.
• The proof of correction must be acceptable to the court. A court appearance before the Judge may be required.
• Pay the dismissal fee.

The following charges may be dismissed with a Dismissal Fee:

• Display Altered, Unclean, or Obscured License Plates.
• Fail to Display Driver's License.
• Violate Driver's License Restriction or Endorsement.
• Operate Vehicle with Defective Equipment.
• Operate Motor Vehicle without License Plates or with One Plate.

To have a citation from the above list dismissed, you must:

• Appear in court by the appearance date on your citation.
• Get the violation corrected before your first court date and provide proof to that effect to the court.
• The proof of correction must be acceptable by the court. (Usually a photo, copy, letter from DPS, or your license.) A court appearance before the Judge may be required.
• Pay the dismissal fee.
