Project Status: Phase 1 Removals Underway

In 2019, the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan identified key future improvements for Bosque Park, including a comprehensive tree survey and reforestation plan. The plan also called for enhancements to plantings, site furnishings, streetscape elements, and overall site infrastructure to support the park's long-term sustainability and appeal.

Phase 1 Removals Begin.

The first phase of the bosque Park Reforestation and Improvements project is now underway. This initial phase focuses on the removal of trees identified as high risk following a Tree Health Assessment conducted by the Town's Arborist and Landscape Architect. The assessment evaluated each tree's condition based on factors such as age, health, and structural stability, with the goal of ensuring both public safety and the long term ecological health of the park.

Tree removals are being carried out through a carefully planned, phased approach, prioritizing those that pose the most immediate risk to park visitors and the surrounding environment.

Once Phase 1 removals are complete, the project will transition to Phase 1 Tree Plantings. During this stage, a diverse selection of young, resilient trees will be introduced to replace those removed. These trees have been strategically selected for their ability to thrive in Bosque Park's unique environment and are expected to mature over time, helping to preserve and enhance the park's current character for future generations.

Background

Project Overview:

Bosque Park is home to a unique landscape, where existing native trees are vital to the park's character and aesthetic. However, many of these trees are approaching the end of their lifespan, which puts the park at risk loss of character, shade and ecological benefits the trees provide. Some trees are in decline or are nearing the point of being unsafe and if not addressed could pose potential future hazards to park visitors and wildlife. To address these issues, the Town’s Landscape Architect and Arborists have developed a phased reforestation strategy to protect the parks character and ecology while gradually removing the aging and unsafe trees while ensuring that new, younger trees are established to maintain the park's vitality.

Key Objectives:

  1. Assess and Identify Declining or Unsafe Trees: A comprehensive tree assessment to identify trees that are at risk due to age, disease, or safety concerns has been conducted.
  2. Gradual Removal of Declining Trees: A phased plan to safely remove trees that could pose future risk to the public or the ecosystem, prioritizing those in most immediate need of removal has been developed.
  3. Planting New Trees for Long-Term Growth: A variety of young, smaller trees to gradually replace those being removed will be introduced over a period of time. These trees will be strategically selected to thrive in the park’s environment and eventually mature to maintain the park’s character.
  4. Ongoing Care and Monitoring: The health of both existing and newly planted trees is monitored regularly. We will Implement proper care, including watering, mulching, and pruning, to ensure the success of the new tree population.
