Jazz Fest is a collaborative effort between the Town of Addison and the University of North Texas Department of Jazz Studies. The Festival features some of the best jazz artists in the nation, screenings of rare jazz films by noted jazz film collector Hal Miller, and performances by the best big bands, combos and jazz vocal groups from the nation's leading schools, including the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band, Two O'Clock Lab Band, Jazz Singers and Jazz Faculty Ensemble. To participate in the invitational festival, middle school, high school, community college and university groups submit applications and recordings for consideration. The top entries in big band, combo, and vocal jazz categories are invited to participate.

Groups performing at the festival are adjudicated by top names in jazz education. In addition, they receive a clinic from a UNT jazz faculty member and attend master classes presented by UNT faculty.  Each day adjudicators select one group from each category to perform on the evening concert. Outstanding soloists are recognized at the Awards Presentation Ceremony on Friday.

Over the years, hundreds of schools have participated in this outstanding event. The 2009 festival includes over 50 groups representing 20 states across the US.  Daytime performance and activities are free.
