How to Read Your Meter
Your meter has a register display similar to the odometer on a car. Read the meter from left to right. Subtract the previous meter reading (as it appears on the front of your bill) from your current reading. The result will indicate the amount of water used (in gallons) since the last reading.
For example: For a typical residential meter 5/8" - 1"
The meter has six moving dials and one permanent dial. Starting from the left, the first dial reads in millions; next is 100 thousands; next is 10 thousands; next is 1 thousands, next is hundreds; next is tens. The permanent dial to the far right indicates tenths and is a permanent 0. The meter will also have a leak detector that is shaped like a triangle; when the triangle is turning, it indicates water is running through your meter.
If you would like an operator to assist you with any questions or concerns, please call the Public Works office at 972-450-2871.
Does the Water Department read my meter every month?
Yes. The meter reading staff reads your meter either on the first or second day of each month. If the first lands on a Friday or weekend, your meter will be read the following Monday or Tuesday.
Keeping the top of your meter box clear will help ensure that your meter is accurately read monthly.
