Arapaho Bridge

In 2002, the Town of Addison held a design competition for a signature bridge over Midway Road.  The competition requested a structure that would contribute to Addison's uniqueness and character.  URS Corporation won the competition with a graceful design of blue, tubular steel crafted into a true arch bridge.  HNTB Corporation designed the roadway and retaining walls.  The third phase of construction was built by Archer-Western Company.
Bridge Facts:

  • The bridge consists of 14 spans for a total length of 1575 feet
  • The blue arches are three feet in diameter and are 170 feet long
  • The top of the arch is 52 feet over Midway Road
  • The Bridge design is a true arch with a suspended, four-lane roadway
  • 18 cables, 2.5 inches in diameter, support the roadway and vary from 12 feet to 30 feet in length
  • Sound walls reduce the noise impact on adjacent properties
  • There are more than 220 lights on the bridge to enhance visibility and security
  • The final construction phase includes three pocket parks with a lighted hike and bike trail
  • Landscaping will include more than 600 trees and shrubs
